As reported by Fox News:
Roger Shuler is an independent journalist that was beaten, maced and arrested this week for refusing to obey a judge’s order to stop reporting the truth regarding former Alabama Governor Rob Riley. I’m re-posting the story from Roger Schuler’s blog @ legalschnauzer.blogspot.com in case the blog is taken down. “Alabama Republican Rob Riley Experiences Fallout From A Messy Affair With Lobbyist Liberty Duke
Rob Riley, the son of former Alabama Governor Bob Riley, had an extramarital affair with a lobbyist that led to a number of personal and political complications, sources tell Legal Schnauzer.
Liberty Smith Duke, a lobbyist based in Clanton, Alabama, had an affair with Riley about six years ago. Riley, a married father of four, heads the Riley Jackson Law Firm in the Birmingham suburb of Homewood. But he is perhaps best known as a major Republican political figure in our state for almost two decades, playing key roles in his father’s campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Alabama Governor’s Office.
The reports about an extramarital affair, and the ugly repercussions from it, raise new questions about the ethics of a political family that has claimed to be opposed to abortion rights, gambling, and other cultural issues on moral grounds.
It also raises new questions about a political son who is seen as a possible future governor, even though he already has a checkered ethical past. Rob Riley’s slippery grasp on matters of right and wrong dates at least to 1996. That’s when he engaged in campaign-finance irregularities, on his father’s behalf, and eventually received a $10,000 fine from the Federal Elections Commission.
The latest revelations could prove to be far more damaging than the FEC case to any future political hopes Rob Riley might have. In a pair of telephone interviews with Legal Schnauzer, Riley admitted knowing Liberty Duke, but denied having an affair with her. During our conversations, Riley angrily hung up on me three times.
Liberty Duke did not respond to a voice message, seeking comment.
Our sources do not have an exact time frame on the Riley/Duke affair, but it appears to have happened between 2005 and 2007. That means it likely was going on during the criminal prosecution of former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman, a case that Rob Riley reportedly helped launch.
Who is Liberty Duke? For 2012, the Alabama Ethics Commission lists her as a registered lobbyist for the following entities: Benjamin Gordon Main Sr., ERIS Inc., MedImmune, and Pinnacle Networx Inc.
Alabama Secretary of State records show her as the registered agent for ERIS Inc., a consulting company that was formed in 2002, with an office address of 1155 Co. Rd. 368, Verbena, AL.
Lobbying records from 2008 show her clients as Advanced Technology Systems Inc., Benjamin Gordon Main, Sr., ERIS Inc, Omnilink, Sepracor Inc., and Town of Dauphin Island.
Why should messiness in Rob Riley’s personal life matter to everyday Alabamians? Let’s consider some of the stories in which he has played a prominent role:
* The Congressional Campaign-Finance Scandal of 1996–The Republican Party launched a $3-million advertising blitz aimed at bolstering its candidates in the closing weeks of the 1996 election. The plan was financed by contributions from wealthy donors to a company called Triad Management Services. An investigation unmasked the plan as a money-laundering scheme, and Rob Riley was fined for making and accepting excessive contributions.
* The Plot to Launch a Political Prosecution Against Don Siegelman–Former Alabama GOP operative Jill Simpson testified under oath before Congress in 2007 that Rob Riley told her an offer had been extended to former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman to drop a criminal investigation in exchange for his decision not to contest Bob Riley’s razor-close electoral victory in the 2002 governor’s race. Simpson also testified that Rob Riley was on a conference call in which key Alabama Republicans discussed a plan to launch a bogus prosecution against Siegelman. Rob Riley later would file an affidavit, claiming “I have no memory of being on a phone call.” Meanwhile, Simpson produced phone records showing that a call took place at the time she had indicated.
* Medicare Fraud and Performance Group LLC–Rob Riley best is known as a lawyer and politician’s son, but he also is a business owner, heading a physical-therapy company called Performance Group LLC. A whistleblower named Ingrid Awtrey Law claimed in a 2008 federal lawsuit that Riley’s company engaged in widespread Medicare fraud, including forgeries of physician signatures.
* Indian Gaming Money and the Battle Against Non-Indian Gaming–Like his father, Rob Riley long has claimed to be opposed to gambling, on moral grounds. But newspaper reports last fall showed that Rob Riley helped funnel Indian gaming money to an organization that fights non-Indian gambling facilities in Alabama. Both Riley and A. Eric Johnston, the director of Citizens for a Better Alabama, claimed they did not know the $100,000 came from Indian gaming sources. But veteran Montgomery journalist Bob Martin caught Johnston in at least one clear lie about the money, calling into question the validity of most everything he and Riley have said on the subject.
Numerous published reports indicate Rob Riley has only a casual acquaintance with the truth in his public life. Now, we learn that his personal life also has been riddled with dishonesty.
Riley’s wife, the former Leslie McLeod, of Lineville, Alabama, has knowingly or unknowingly suffered. So have Liberty Duke and Rob Riley’s Republican colleagues.
That’s because the affair led to some complications that are ugly, indeed.”
I watched a black man yesterday (Dr. Ben Carson) announce to the world that Obamacare was WORSE than slavery. I just called my Rep and asked that a bill be brought to the floor that de-funds Obamacare and re-institutes slavery. Let’s watch those conservatives pricks put their money where their mouth is now. I intend to meet Dr. Carson in person and congratulate him on the end of Obamacare and the beginning of his life as my slave from now on. “I look forward to purchasing you at the next auction.” If my tone and language upset you, well, they should!! Health care is worse than slavery?! FROM A BLACK MAN!? WTF???
These are the words I’ve had to prepare myself for. The Romney train has somehow gotten so much momentum that it seems unstoppable now. It’s like a bad movie, pick any one involving a high speed vehicle that can’t stop. Only a few thoughts come to mind. First, the women of this country have chosen to be treated like some kind of inferior race. They want to be told what medications they can and cannot take. They want to have no choice in procreation matters. They want to make less money. So be it. Ma’am, if you don’t mind, I’ll just call you “door mat” from now on. Sound good? Of course it does, because I’m a man and I know best! What a world.
Second, if you’re not rich already, welcome to the rest of your poor life. You’re a second class citizen now! Oh, those rich guys told you about all sorts of pots of gold at the end of their rainbow. What they didn’t say was, your job is now to carry it back over the rainbow to the rich guys so they can be richer! Yes, enjoy your journey, it’s going to be MAGICAL!
Next, your children are all doomed to a lifetime of entrenched, land warfare in Asia. We’ll never get out or if we do it will be Vietnam II with a gazillion more deaths. Your sons and daughters are all going to die simply because Islam scares rich, white christian folk. I’ll send flowers to the funerals. I’m moving my kids to Canada. You can call me and them anything you like, at the end of the day I’ll still be able to call my kids. I’d think long and hard about that if I were you.
Last, there better not be one word of complaint when all of this comes down. YOU did this. YOU built it! YOU put the white back in White House. Congratulations to each and every one of you. I’m going to resume complaining about life not being handed to me on a silver platter. Oh yes.

When Fantastico works, it works great. When it doesn’t, it’s a royal pain in the ass. I got notified through CPanel that my WordPress install required an update so I kicked it off through Fantastico. I should have known better and updated manually. This will be the 3rd time I’ve “trusted” a WordPress upgrade through Fantastico only to be savagely beaten in the process. This is a polite warning to all Cpanel/Fantastico users, DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATED UPGRADE FOR WORDPRESS 3.3.2!! It will almost certainly trash your entire website and possibly your server and I’m quite serious. The problem is actually the script provided to Fantastico by WordPress, I shouldn’t really be trashing Fantastico for this although they should be doing some due diligence to ensure their scripts work properly.
The problem begins with the backup part of the script. I have WordPress installed in my root directory but I have a lot of add-on Domains (completely unrelated to my WordPress blog) that use sub-directories off of the root directory. The WordPress 3.3.2 backup script assumes I want to back up EVERYTHING off of my root directory, which is a bogus assumption in the real world, so the script immediately died after creating a corrupted 18.5GB tgz file. Amusingly, the file showed 2GB in FTP, 18.5GB through CPanel’s file manager and downloaded through HTML at 12GB. There should have been an error break, time out condition, something in the script that stopped everything right there so my install would have been saved but NO. It continued on, leaving me with no viable backup to restore from.
The next problem begins with the table prefixes. The 3.3.2 automated upgrade assumed I wanted wp_ prefixes. I did not. I use unique table prefixes in all my product installs (a check to make sure I don’t update the wrong tables in different installations of the same product). After the backup portion of the script died, the update completely stalled and when I refreshed the page, I just got a default installation page so I put in some credentials and an email address and pressed continue. 2 years of work gone in an instant….with just a HELLO WORLD post to show for my efforts. Everything was gone, with no possible restore. Well, sort of. I installed a WordPress backup plugin ages ago just because of nonsense like this so I did have a backup lying around somewhere but it’s a manual effort and only for paranoid loons like me. Short story, I did have a fallback but it was that fallback that keyed me into the table prefix problem.
You see, after the upgrade I dropped all the tables and imported my backed up SQL file only to find there was no change whatsoever. I was still left with a default WordPress template and a single HELLO WORLD post. I immediately had a panic attack. WHY!? Took my pills, calmed down and started digging. I could see all my posts through phpMyAdmin….so why weren’t they showing!? The wp_ prefixes didn’t catch my attention at first because I’m used to seeing those on lots of other sites. The light finally dawned on marble-head that my posts and pics and music and videos were all under a different prefix but the default install was using wp_. The problem was in the wordpress config file, which was looking only for wp_ table prefixes. Updated that to my unique table prefix and VOILA! My site returned.
In short, here’s how YOU should upgrade your WordPress install to 3.3.2. First, do your own backup before you do anything. There are lots of plugins for that or you can do it yourself. Be absolutely sure you backup your table though! It will save you. Next, do NOT use Fantastico. If it backs up all the wrong data like it did with me and your allocated server space is exceeded, you could be severely screwed and lose not just your website but other clients! Don’t do it. Do the upgrade from within WordPress – I found at least that only touched relevant files. If the upgrade stalls or dies, don’t panic, just refresh the page. It will finish but leave you on the default install page. Put in your credentials an continue. Yes, you’ll be left with a crap starter page like me but it’s all good. Go to your favorite table editor and drop all your WordPress tables and import your SQL backup. Check your site, if you use the default wp_ table prefixes, you should be back in business. If not, check those table prefixes in your table editor and write down what you just imported. Now go to your wp-config.php file and change the appropriate line from wp_ to whatever your table prefixes are. Last, go back to your table editor and delete all tables with prefix wp_. Now everything should be back to normal.
This is way too much work to be going through for a simple update to a canned install of WordPress. Very disappointing. Will have to troll some support sites and put a fire under some butts to ensure the next upgrade is less painful.
This should give the PIPA and SOPA supporters a sobering bit of data. Louis’ special, the one I PAID FOR (to feel all good about myself), and he gave away for $5 a pop, made SO MUCH MONEY that he gave away 1/4 of it to charity, 1/4 of it as bonuses to his staffers, 1/4 to actually pay the bill for the special and only kept 1/4 for himself. After its release, it was widely available via all the “bad” sites but that had ZERO impact on his net sales. ZERO. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is absolutely no measurable data to support the MPAA and RIAA claims that copyright infringement is bankrupting anyone. The proof is in the pudding – the people who would have paid for a product did and the people who were never going to pay anyway didn’t. And in the end, the artist made out like a bandit – independent of all entities that would have had him copyright the material and then seek royalties which would never appear. GOOD FOR HIM and good for the internet. Louis CK just gave the MPAA and RIAA a very large bucket of shut up.
