WHOA!!  We've been to some good demolition derbies before, but THIS year was the BEST year EVER!!!  JUST LOOK at the madness!!!  LOL

(Click on any picture to see it enlarged)

We arrived around 3:30, all was well. Hunter and Andrew got tons of ride tickets and got to it immediately. I made it through a fun house with them, which was a really stupid idea.  Almost broken my other hip! Then I found GIANT geese...dude...not kidding..these things were HUGE!! Crowd starts growing.. Until these freaky, Jurassic things show up. CREEPY GEESE!! Happy Shiny People BUNNIES!!
Little Piggies Here comes mom to feed little piggies.  Mom is VERY LARGE!! Piggies appear to have weaned...show no interest in mom. So everyone digs for roots for awhile. Then it's off for some ice cream.  I didn't like this stand. They milk the cows right behind where the ice cream is served.  CREEPY!! I just asked for 10 seconds of good behavior so I could snap a post card picture. Snap 2 - still no postcard picture. Snap3 - I'm losing faith...
Snap 4 - No hope left.  LOL. We finally make it to the grandstands, 1 hour early and it was still too late. We're WAY over on the right hand side of the smashing field.  There's where the cars are gonna come in. And, here they come. The Big Smoosh is nearly over for Heat 1. Clearing the field for Heat 2. Heat 2 moved along quickly. Heat 3 all set up and ready to go. Some nice, big, solid cars for this run.
Snuck over to get a close up of this sweet ride before it toasted. This guy should have stayed home. Cars Whizzing by to get set up in a hurry. Last of the stragglers in. Some real heaps turned out of this round. I could not believe the size of the crowd across the way.  Incredible. The action became so intense after Heat 2, that I couldn't get a picture DURING the Derby. To do so would have invited giant mud blobs all over me and my equipment. The water trucks were sparse this year, so instead of slick soup, we got large mud patties being hurled at us.
You'll notice how everyone is now covered... It was a futile effort at best. Hunter seemed pleased nonetheless. Now came the FUN FUN FUN Heat. Before the final Heat 5, they do a demo derby of 4 cylinder cars only. Little, tiny cars buzzing like bees all over the track, trying to smash each other. TONS of them showed up for the event this year. And once they started rolling, the parts starting flying FURIOUSLY. We THOUGHT this was just a broken coolant hose, which is common enough.
But the smoke wasn't sweet smelling...and it got worse, fast. They the spark... Then the fire...yes..FIRE.   FIRE FIRE FIRE!!! Hey!  Where is  everyone going? That fire grew... and grew.. Until finally, the folks on the other side went running for the doors. You can see all of the cleared seats in this picture.  I was VERY proud of how calmly and coolly everyone got themselves together and headed for safety.
They used every available fire extinguisher and it still burned. So they brought in the fire truck. Didn't want to spray the fuel over everyone so they took it slow. Little water here... Little there... Get under the hood... And, FINALLY, about 25 minutes later, the fire was out. EVERYONE cheered and breathed a sigh of relief. and soon afterwards the engines restarted...
people got back to their cars... the smoke rose again... and the smashing began again in earnest. These things were Energizer powered. They kept going... and going... and going... lol...so much smoke. This is our favorite car.  Little 333...cause he's half as big as car 666.  LOL.
It came down to two Chevys... Who hammered it out... Until finally one of them stopped and just wouldn't start again.  THAT was FUN! OK.  Time for final heat. Which is comprised of the last 4 cars standing from the previous 4 heats. These things are a RUIN already and they have to fight again. This one particularly caught my eye.  DOOMED!! Then they were off. The ground behaved a bit better this time and I got some action photos.
By and large, they seemed to group near us in the final heat. So we got some LOUD, really neat crashes and bashes. And we got a bird's eye view of the action on the field. Guys not wanting to obey the red flag or accept being counted out. Guys fighting with officials and police because they didn't want their car labeled "disabled". Horror show.  But the field was clearing. Down to just a few now...and they had plenty of engine and tires left. Good stuff just a few feet from us. And some more.
I'm snapping pictures like crazy now. They're all so close we can touch them. Just a couple cars left. Neither would give up and they wound up locked in the other end of the field. We basically just got to see the rubble pile up... Until it was over.  Demo Derby 2006 was over and we had a GREAT time!! WOW!! Hee hee hee...BOY was it a good time!!  These guys were out cold when we got home I love this picture for 2 reasons.   You can see Andrew's glow stick and  you can see Hunter's drool!  HA HA HA HA HA HA Too bad they had to shower afterwards...First Day of School the Next Day!!  WOOOO!!
